Hurricane Irma relief efforts in Sarasota FL

As the people of Houston rebuild after the devastating Hurricane the people of Florida are preparing for a category 5 hurricanes heading in to the state right now. Hurricane Irma is just making land fall and expected to pummel the area on Sunday and Monday. Area residence are boarding up houses and hunkering down with all the supplies they have been able to gather. Many area resident have left the state for higher ground and as is the case in many natural disasters it is the poor and lower income people who can’t afford to leave and must do their best to weather the storm.

Todd Dennison is the chairman of the Sarasota country Libertarian Party and is already preparing to take to the streets after Irma passes to clear roads and downed trees with chain saws. He has offered to help with supplies like water, toiletries and food and just yesterday put out a call to action on facebook for people to donate to his efforts. Todd has a track record of helping his community with crypto donations and a few years back did some homeless out reach with bitcoin under the banner Dogecoin Not bombs. You can see some of the photos from this project on twitter and facebook.

We have set up a multi-sig wallet with Todd and this blog post will serve as a log for photos of his efforts and a call for more donations, if you can help your neighbor in this time of need please help Todd with the resources needed to make a positive impact.

Todd is armed with the Gyft app to buy supplies at Target, Home depot and Walmart and should be able to cash out some bitcoin to his bank with his coinbase account if needed. He has pledged 100% of funds donated to this effort to go to helping his community and is willing to share his bank statement and receipts for complete transparency.

On Sunday Night right as the storm was passing his location Todd interview with The Crypto Show to talk about his plans for out reach efforts. The hour long interview can be found on Lets talk bitcoin here. During the show it was announced that Bitcoin.com would be donating in Bitcoin Cash. A wallet has been set up and secured.

Day 1: Monday September 11th, the storm passes.

Todd gave a first look at the damages this morning on the Ernest Hancock radio show, Audio and Video here. Todd has already been clearing roads and is getting ready to travel to near by Naples FL. This post will be updated with photos as they become available.

Day 2: Sept 12th.

Communication with Todd is sparse, internet communication such as Facebook messenger seams to be working better than SMS messages. Todd has acquired more chain saws with our fist bitcoin donations and has been clearing trees from roads and neighbors yards. Todd is still with out power, ice is no where to be found and in very high demand.

Day 3: Sept 13th

Todd is coordinating with other members of the libertarian party of Florida and his friend Steve is gearing up to head down to the Keys with his 4×6 trailer, we will be sending him some of the donated bitcoin to help with supplies. The Gyft app is proving to be the fastest way to spend bitcoin in the real world but we may call on others to help buy some of the Bitcoin Cash we revived from Bitcoin.com to convert to paypal dollars or cash in hand. If you are in the area and can help in this way please reach out. Todd will be heading to the inner city tomorrow to check out the damages and see where he can help the most.

Day 4: Sept 14th

Todd has been working in Sarasota clearing trees but in the background has been networking with other groups and coalitions working in the are including the Liberty Coalition for Disaster Relief and Evacuees Of The Keys.

This post from Todd’s Facebook page DogecoinNotBopmbs.

We rolled through Central Cocoanut, Gillespie Park, and Newtown and fired up the saws for a bit. It’s a big mess in our lower income communities and they’re very grateful for any help.
I’ve contacted local food banks and they’re flush with supplies.
Sarasota County is still at 26% without power, and of course my house is in that 26%.
We’re still looking into Highlands County to see if we can assist with anything.
We’re also going to help stock some Keys residents who evacuated with relief supplies for their trip home.

If you know of any low income or elderly neighbors who do not have the ability or resources to trim or remove fallen trees which are obstructing accessibility to their property or are blocking roads please let us know and we will do what we can to help.

Day 5: Sept 15th.

Steven has loaded up at Home depot and Walmart with the Gyft.com app and is ready to head down to the Florida keys tomorrow. Thank you all for donating, this is what you have helped Steven purchase.

We have blankets, bleach, dish soap, garbage bags, toilet paper, paper towels, shirts, socks and underwear, hand sanitizer, bug spray, isopropyl alcohol, bandages, plates, eating utensils, baby wipes, tarps, bleach, duct tape, and more

Day 6: Sept 16th.

A quiet day, Steven is in rute to the Florida Keys and Todd prepairs for a trip down south to Immokalee.

Day 7: Sept 17th.

We were requested to head to Immokalee instead of Naples and I’m very glad we did.
Immokalee looks crushed.
That community needs all the help they can get.
We dropped supplies at PACE Center for Girls Collier and they are working with the Friendship Baptist Church doing outreach and helping the community recovery the best they can.
I’ll leave a few links to the above organizations and some news coverage of the damage in the area.

Day 8: Sept 18th.

Todd on Declare your independence with Ernest Hancock.

Week two and Three, I have been travailing last week and it looks like Todd has had to get back to his Day job as well. Below are some photos from this past Sunday the 24th where Todd took a load of supplies back down to Immokalee, Todd described this low income area as devastated and has been working with the Peace center for Girls to help.

A good start for our trip to the Friendship Baptist Church in Immokalee. We’ll be leaving supplies for Pace Center for Girls, the church, and those in need in their community.
Lots of medical and hygiene stuff, lots of non perishable foods, hundreds of diapers, and baby care stuffs, and lots of bottled water.
Thanks to everyone who donated and helped us get to Immokalee!

Bitcoin Black Friday a huge success for Bitcoin Not Bomb$

The biggest shopping day of the year was a huge victory for bitcoiners and is proving that this new currency is approaching mass adoption. The website BitcoinBlackFriday.com reported over 500 websites that offered one day deals in bitcoin and from the looks of it people responded with purchases of all kinds of cool things for bitcoin. We got in on the action and was listed with other great charities such as AntiWar.com, Fr33Aid, the BitGive Foundation along with several other organizations collecting donations or offering a part of sales to aid in relief efforts in the Philippines.

Bitcoin not Bombs is wrapping up our #HoodieTheHomeless campaign and is offering free international shipping along with some other fun items in our shop. We are still accepting orders for our Bitcoin Not Bomb t-shirts and hoodies and have extended our Black Friday deal until the end of Cyber Monday (Now called #CryptoMonday). You can still order a shirt or hoodie for your self and help someone in need this winter. Read more about our Hoodie the Homeless project here or check out this fun video produced by our friend Tom of The Bitcoin Group.

We are continuing to raise funds to buy the reaming discontinued hoodies offered to us at a discount by Mass Appeal. Prices below are set to cover the cost one for one. The hoodies that are being offered to you the public are not from the same discontinued batch and is right from the supplier. Plus size hoodies are marked higher. We are offering free international shipping in celebration of Bitcoin Black Friday and have extended that offer through Crypto Monday. The ordering process is not 100% automated and we will be contacting you and asking for your size preference.

What a difference a year makes at Antiwar.com

As you all know by now bitcoin broke 1,000 fiat war dollars today, but what you may not know is one year ago today Antiwar.com finally jumped in to the currency revolution and started accepting bitcoin donations. Bitcoin was around 10 or 15 dollars at the time and Antiwar staff had some hesitation to get in involved in the relatively new crypto-currency. Back then the common objections were, “Can we get ‘real’ money for our bitcoin? Do we have to allocate our time learning some new strange technology?” After a short 15 minute phone call and setting Director of Operations Angela Keaton up with a CoinBase.com account, I assured her it was as easy as PayPal to use and I had her send the bitcoin address to my inbox. I was ready to send the first bitcoin donation to end war! At the time WordPress had just announced that it would take bitcoin for its website services and the bitcoin community was a buzz with coins being sent to just about any website that would start accepting them. Angela posted that long string of numbers and letters on the sites blog and thought for sure only a few donations would come in. It was an interesting experiment to the staff at Antiwar.com, but 72 hours later and after $1000 dollars in donations the experiment was no longer seen as just some fringe geeky internet money anymore.
Angelaandvader
Angela and Uncle Vader

Shortly after Antiwar found success in the bitcoin space big names in libertarian circles started taking bitcoin donations. Sites like Lew Rockwell and Ballet Access News announced that they would jump on the band wagon. The Austrian school economists could no longer ignore the bitcoin and discussion on libertarian blogs picked up. In May, along with Stephanie Murphy and Teresa Warmke of Fr33 aid, and Free State Project President Carla Gericke we traveled to the first US bitcoin conference put on by the Bitcoin Foundation. The ladies where to give a panel talk about non profits and bitcoin. (Video at the end of post) As we walked in to the San Jose convention center Friday afternoon we saw a huge empty arena and hundreds of empty seats. I remember remarking to my partner Davi Barker “It’s a barn, they will never fill it.” But by the first night, hundreds of Bitcoiners poured in to the hall and Angela later said to us “I had no idea it was this big, that so many people where excited about bitcoin and would come to such an event.” That was the moment and that night it finally became clear to all of us that this was not going away. Whether you’re a libertarian or not, this new state-bank-crushing currency is not going to fade away quietly any time soon.

So, it’s one year later and Antiwar is no longer looking to find an easy way to cash out. The site is holding bitcoin in a strategic reserve and ready to launch new efforts to end war and imperialism around the globe with a currency that is not directly contributing to the madness it seeks to end. Future efforts of oppression around the world will be met with contributions from a very generous community that is fundamentally opposed to bankers and political sociopaths sending our young brothers and sisters off to die in meaningless conflicts that we have no business fighting in the first place.

Antiwar.com is currently in its end of year fundraiser and needs your help to keep operations going next year. As a division of the Randolph Bourne institute Antiwar.com is a proper 501(c)3 and donations made in fiat are tax deductible. The site has also published a litecoin address on the blog. While I greatly respect the opinion of bitcoin diehards like Erik Voorhees, it’s not up to us if litecoin will succeed as a crypto-currency. If the coin has a use advancing Antiwar.com’s mission then it has value to us. Learn more about donation options at Antiwar.com/Donate or call the office directly at 323-512-7095.

Bitcoin Celebrated As Way To Avoid Taxes

Bitcoin Value Soars And Dropsby Eleazar David Melendez | Posted: 04/16/2013 at The Huffington Post

It’s 364 days until most Americans will once again face a deadline to file their taxes, but Teresa Warmke already has a plan for Tax Day 2014: She’s going to skip the whole thing.

The treasurer of a limited liability company, Warmke has struck on what she celebrates as a novel way to avoid any audit trail — and thereby any liabilities to Uncle Sam. Goodbye American dollar, hello bitcoin.

Fr33 Aid Abandons Non-Profit Tax Status in Favor of Bitcoin

Fr33Aid_200x200Published April 15th, 2013 at Daily Anarchist

Exciting news from the world of Bitcoin this Tax Cattle Day. Today is the day, with fear in our heart, we submit to the human farmers who fleece us under threat of violence. But today Fr33 Aid is making the courageous move of declaring their financial independence by willfully and publicly severing their ties with the IRS, forsaking all the banking privileges that entails, and announcing themselves as an entirely bitcoin based organization. As far as I know they are the first charitable organization to do this. I hope you can appreciate how radical this is.

Many organizations seek non-profit recognition from the IRS in an attempt to protect themselves from asset confiscation. In April 2012, Fr33 Aid applied for this privileged status, but since then the process has been nothing but a bureaucratic nightmare. Today Fr33 Aid announced they have abandoned their IRS application and adopted bitcoin as their primary financial instrument.

Fr33 Aid Treasurer, Teresa Warmke said:

“Now that there are ways for us to do banking without government involvement, we decided fulfilling (IRS demands) would not be a responsible way for Fr33 Aid to spend its money nor for our volunteers to spend their time.”

They determined that their attempt to comply with the IRS’s confusing demands was  not only unnecessary, but counterproductive to their mission of supporting volunteers who provide first aid and educational services at liberty-oriented events, and demonstrating the value of voluntary mutual aid. By making this bold transition into a bitcoin based organization they will be able circumvent the complex and burdensome requirements of state regulated banks, retain complete control over their assets, and focus entirely on their important mission. Teresa adds:

“It feels great to stop doing business with government agencies now!”

This as an important step toward the development of a robust non-profit sector in the bitcoin economy. Further, Fr33 Aid’s Director of Operations, Dr. Stephanie Murphy and Treasurer Teresa Warmke will participate in a panel about Bitcoin for Non-profit Organizations at the Bitcoin 2013 conference in San Jose, CA next month. They will be joined by Angela Keaton of AntiWar.com and Carla Gericke of the Free State Project.

Fr33 Aid is keeping their current bank account in order to accept dollar donations via check, credit card, PayPal and Dwolla, but the account will be kept as empty as possible to minimize the risk of either bank or government confiscation in the future. Teresa says:

“We don’t consider any of these payment methods as trustworthy as direct bitcoin donations. In the future, any donations we receive via traditional banking methods will be converted to bitcoin in a timely manner.”

Fr33 Aid is still committed to the level of transparency that the state requires from recognized non-profit organizations. They publish an annual report on their site with at least as much information as is normally disclosed on IRS Form 990.
